ATHENS Ohio – After more than 11 years at the helm, Jim Schaus is stepping down June 30 as Ohio University athletic director in order to take a position as the Southern Conference commissioner.
Is it time for UNA to look into SoCon or OVC membership? Geographically, it would make sense. This would be the time for a jump to the SoCon perhaps.

Honestly I feel like the ASun is the best fit for UNA. The public schools are similar to each other and the conference as a whole is getting stronger. The SoCon is pretty full unless they decide to add without anyone leaving. Between Florida schools(ASun) and the Carolinas(Big South football) I think we have a good opportunity for recruiting and getting our brand out. That being said, I wouldn't mind a football only membership in the SoCon but I like the ASun as our primary conference.

Others did not want to dance with us. ASun and Big South football did. Would be a poor showing on our part to leave them on the dance floor this early in the ball. OVC had their shot and their decision cost us 'bout a decade. Time to move on and make the ASun/Big S stronger.

Not to mention the ASun wanted us from day one, but at the time didn't have a real solution for football.

Instead of North Alabama leaving the ASUN, how about Western Carolina, East Tennessee State, UT-Chattanooga leaving the SoCon and Jacksonville State leaving the OVC and joining the ASUN and then the ASUN start sponsoring football. I know the OVC is closer for Travel, but it offers very little in recruiting value.

I know the OVC is closer for Travel, but it offers very little in recruiting value. I think one thing preventing this right now is WCU/ETSU/UTC and the so-called “prestige” of the SoCon. And yeah, the SoCon has a wonderful history. I’d love for us to be a part of it, under certain conditions. But in its current form, it’s a strange conference. Those three schools don’t seem to fit in with ones like Wofford, Citadel, and VMI. I know there are plenty of conferences with a mix of public and private. However, I just feel like the people here in Chattanooga would get a lot more excited for the Mocs (which historically lack fan support) if they were consistently playing similar medium-sized public schools like JSU, Tennessee Tech, and yeah, UNA. Its really sad the whole thing can’t get blown up and started over, because if so, you could make a heck of a conference out of schools from Alabama and Tennessee + maybe another state or two. And geographically it would probably save a lot of schools money on travel. Maybe coaches would moan about the lack of “exposure” in other states for recruiting... I dunno. Winning is the biggest recruiter of all, though.

Just imagine the ASun with football schools
UNA JSU Chattanooga Western Carolina KSU Eastern Kentucky Austin Peay North Florida FGCU
And the non football Lipscomb NJIT Liberty Stetson Jacksonville
I wouldn't mind that conference at all.
